Cantonstock is MusicCounts! primary fundraiser for the year. All elementary, middle, and high school bands, choruses and orchestras perform in a casual and fun setting! In addition, there's games, food, face painting, raffles, silent auctions and more!

This is all done by our dedicated group of volunteers in the service to the students, programs, instructors, and various facilities of the Canton Public Schools' performing arts programs. We are funded each year by a growing group of Businesses and Individuals who deserve recognition for their generous support. Donations do not need to be large, small donations, good & services for our Cantonstock Raffle, even donating your time can be a great help. Cantonstock’s Longtime Advocate: Sue Harrington!
For many, many, many, many years—well maybe not that many years—Sue Harrington has been a driving force behind MusicCounts!, as well as Cantonstock and all of the performing arts in Canton.
“My tenure on the MusicCounts! Board began in 2003, and before I knew it, I was MC! president, a position I would fill for 10 years,” Harrington, who recently retired from the Board, reflected. “Back then, our fundraising was very modest and consisted of
pumpkin sales, bakes sales and so on, netting a couple of hundred dollars here and there. We decided we needed a big fund-raising event, ideally one that would engage the wider community. That is how Cantonstock was born! The concept was to present student
performances in a music festival atmosphere that was decidedly more casual and kid-friendly than the usual concerts.
The Cantonstock name was the brainchild of the students. Cantonstock was an instant success! We raised a ton of money that allowed us to enlarge our support of music in Canton, and it was a fun event for both kids and adults.
With each year, we’ve listened to feedback and tweaked things to make it even better.” Indeed, Cantonstock has grown to be the annual major fundraiser for MusicCounts!—the non-profit, volunteer-led organization that supports efforts to raise
about $15,000-$20,000 annually to supplement school budgets and be able to fund programs and equipment.

“We lost so much of the Performing Arts last year because of the pandemic, that we were determined to begin this year—as we begin every year—with Cantonstock!—on Saturday, November 7, from Noon to 2:00,” says Canton Public Schools Performing Arts Director Catherine Eckersley. “Of course it will be different. It will be all virtual. Available to everyone online. The teachers and students have been hard at work since school began, preparing performances that will thrill the entire family. This year we’ll all saying, Covid may keep us apart, but it isn’t keeping us silent!”

The prime mover for this year’s Virtual Cantonstock is Performing Arts Teacher at the Hansen and JFK, Daniel Hulsman. “I really enjoy creating online opportunities for the performing arts,” says Hulsman, who will also serve as the show’s Emcee. “The students love performing and want to put on a great show. They will! It will be different, but it will still be a great show!”
“It may be all virtual,” says Bekki Kowalski, MusicCounts! president, “but the need to raise money for all of our schools’ music programs is very real. Please join us as we come together as a community to enjoy the performances and help MusicCounts!”
Hulsman says that the livestream will feature pre-recorded performances as well as student videos where kids talk about how much music and singing and acting mean to them. “And,” he adds, “if we can swing it, there may be some live performances as well. It’s a whole new concept—but with the same talent and excitement and dedication.”

10/29/20 - Daniel Hulsman Brings Cantonstock to Life
That Cantonstock is alive and well is due, in very large measure, to the inspirational work of Daniel Hulsman, music teacher at Hansen, JFK and Luce.
“The only way to do it, of course, was to do in online, a virtual live-streaming show,” Hulsman says. “It’s been technically challenging—but it’s also been a great deal of fun for the teachers and students. It won’t be same this year, of course, but it will be enthusiastic, entertaining and inspirational.”
Hulsman and the other performing-arts teachers in the Canton public schools, have been encouraging students to submit audition videos. About two-hours worth of those performances will be streamed live on Saturday, November 7, starting at Noon. But all the videos submitted will then be made available on the Cantonstock website.
Hulsman, who’s been teaching for seven years, is in his third year in Canton. “It means even more to me now,” he says, “as my wife Katelyn and I have two school-age boys and we certainly value the importance of music in their lives.” Hulsman also noted that MusicCounts! was a huge surprise and a great advantage when he began teaching in Canton. “The programs and equipment they provide really enhances what teachers and students can accomplish.”
